Artwork is a treasured part of our homes and businesses, adding beauty and culture to the space. Whether it’s a painting, sculpture, photograph, or any other object, art can transform any environment. While owning a piece of art is incredibly rewarding, it also requires proper care and maintenance in order to stay in its best condition for years to come. In this blog post, we’ll look at how to properly care for your artwork to keep it in pristine condition.
Routine cleaning
The first step in art care is routine cleaning. This involves dusting the surface of the artwork using a soft-bristled brush or a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment. It is important not to use water or cleaning chemicals, as these can damage the surface of the artwork. For more delicate pieces, such as photographs or prints, it is best to have them cleaned by an experienced conservator.
Humidity control
One of the biggest factors that can impact artwork is the humidity level in the room where it’s placed. High humidity can cause mold to form on paintings, while low humidity can cause cracking and peeling paint on wood sculptures and other artwork made from natural materials. The ideal relative humidity level for these types of rooms should be between 40 and 60 percent. If you don’t already have one, consider investing in a dehumidifier or humidifier depending on where you live and how often you use your artwork.
Exposure to light
UV rays from direct sunlight can cause fading, discoloration, and even cracking over time, so it’s best to keep your artwork out of direct sunlight whenever possible. If your artwork is exposed to light (i.e. near windows), consider installing UV protective film on the windows or installing blinds during peak hours, if necessary. This will protect your artwork from long-term damage caused by UV exposure while still allowing natural light into the room when needed.
